"WARWICK AVENUE" by DUFFY

Well you’ve heard of Notting Hill, now Welsh wonder Aimee Duffy immortalises a slightly less salubrious part of London – Warwick Avenue – in this real heartbreaker of a song. Mercy was a bit of a classic and Duffy – Amy Winehouse without the hang-ups – was compared to everyone from Dusty Springfield to Madonna. But she proves she’s the real deal with this simple, but emotion-charged ballad about a break-up. The song is straightforward but powerful, but given the full impact of Duffy’s darkly sensual voice, it bursts into your heart.

Originally the video featured her walking along a London street holding a balloon while dancers skipped around her, but they filmed a shot of her singing in the back of a London taxi when she spontaneously burst into tears mid-song. It had so much raw emotion that they dumped the balloons and dancers and left Duffy pouring out her heart in the cab. It’s incredibly moving – reminiscent of Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U. Strong track and a memorable video.
