WII FIT (Nintendo)

I know what you babeluvers are like. The only reason you go to the gym is to get an eyeful of all the hot babes in their shorts and leotards. I’ve got some bad news for you. This latest Wii innovation may put an end to all that. Why bother with the hassle of the gym when you can get the Wii Fit, jump around on a balance board in the privacy of your own home, have more fun and get fit at the same time? The babe count at your local gym may decline as a result.

Well not me, of course, I quite like wobbling around at the gym getting chatted up by the young lads but maybe that’s just me. This new exergaming, however, does have a lot to commend it. It arrives with a balance board that looks like a set of bathroom scales and you bounce up and down on it to a variety of programmes – skiing, hula hoping, aerobics, dance routines, tightrope walking (!) and other game techniques all apparently designed to get you hot and sweaty.

Nintendo are pushing the fitness side of it, though it’s the fun element that will ultimately shift units and if you find yourself shedding pounds as well, that’s a happy bonus. It’s a cross between a video game and a personal home trainer – something for those who feel guilty about not being fitter but don’t have the self-discipline to do something about it. Faced with a fun game involving climbing a mountain on balancing on a high wire puts a different perspective on it.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen attempts to transport the gym into your own home and there was a time when everyone was buying up home exercise bikes, most of which now lay rotting in lofts (well, mine is anyway!) Will the same fate await the Wii Fit? Let’s hope not. It IS fun and it makes you feel righteous to be playing an interactive game with so many physical benefits. It’s not going to stop me strutting my stuff at the gym though. Got to meet cute boys somehow…
