SUPER MARIO GALAXY (Wii)

My favourite Italian plumber (not that I know many – I usually have other uses for MY Italians) gets his first Wii outing so that’s my week sorted. I mean, Mario is the great godfather of gaming but having conquered the land and the world, Mario now tackles the whole bleeping galaxy. And it takes it up another notch.

The 3D graphics are amazing, the story’s good and the game itself pretty much spot-on. Tricky enough to keep you alert and interested, but not too impenetrable to send you into despair. The fun comes thick and fast, it looks and feels the business and isn’t too overcomplicated, filling the screen with colour, vitality, laughter and music. Could a cyber babe want anything more. Well, maybe a few things, but here’s not the time or place to get into them.

The thing is, I grew up with Super Mario in cyber land and have been with him through all the different incarnations and systems. In some ways I think of him as the little brother I never had, scolded him when he’s strayed or let his standards slip on occasions, but I’ve always loved him and I’m very proud of his achievements. But now he’s gone out into the stratosphere, I think it’s his finest hour. I can’t tell you how exciting it is when you go up and hit that first galaxy and the colours rain down on you and set about circling planets, collecting stars and being dazzled by the fantastic graphics and the brilliant orchestral music.

Love it, love it, love it...
