21/11/2007 GIRLS ALOUD: Tangled Up Every week stories abound that Girls Aloud are on the cusp of splitting up, especially when they did their greatest hits thingy. But here they are on their fifth album and still considered both blissfully cool and gloriously fluffy and inconsequential, they must be the most successful manufactured band in history. They’ve nailed the pop thing perfectly – a glitzy blast of joy and light that has always managed to craftily stay one step ahead of naffness and embrace technology with enough panache to carry the necessary tweeness to audiences of all generations and cultures. The fact that they are all gorgeous babes who make sumptuous videos is an enormous part of their appeal, of course, but their sexy appeal still seems to leap out of the speakers when you play this rather splendid CD. There’s one track here – the next single Call The Shots - that needs only one play to leap inside your head and leap around in there with such glee that you find yourself sing it at appropriate moments. I was having an important business meeting with my lawyer and accountant when it suddenly came into my head and I suddenly found myself up on the table dancing like a demented dervish. Very embarrassing. Given this sort of brazen appeal I’ll even forgive the fuzzy grunge of Sexy No No No that dampens the party but thumping house tracks like Girl Overboard and Close To Love soon lift the spirits again to carry the bits when they threaten to try and get too smart for their own good. So well done Cheryl, Sarah, Kimberley, Nadine and the ginger one…you’ve done it again. I’m sure I can speak for all babeluvers when I say we all love you. | ||
